The ultraviolet light emitted by the mercury discharge within a tube is absorbed by the coating, which subsequently emits light of a different color (and with a lower photon energy). How do neon signs get their color?
After extracting pure neon from the atmosphere, they explored its properties with an electric gas discharge tube similar to the tubes used for neon signs today. When electric power is introduced into a tube filled with gas such as neon, it generates heat and the energy generated emits light. Around 1917, Daniel McFarlan Moore, who was then working at the General Electric Company, developed the miniature neon lamp. A neon tube is a sealed glass tube with a metal electrode at each end that is filled with one of several gases at low pressure.
Do neon signs need to be connected?
For example, neon signs near the grill in a restaurant tend to accumulate fat, and neon signs in a bar’s smoking area may be covered in nicotine stains. In contrast, the same length and thickness of the LED neon tube can be consumed up to 1.2 watts for the same duration. They last quite a long time, even though we’ve all seen those half-dead signs that emit a pathetic flicker or don’t work at all. A typical LED neon sign uses only 15 to 20% of the electricity that conventional neon uses in a similar job, while fluorescent and incandescent lamps use significantly more.
